  • What About Me?

    Ed Young

    Hardcover (Philomel, June 10, 2002)
Ed Young once again turns a fable into a saucy collage treat in this tale about a boy who is just looking for a little bit of knowledge! Told he can have knowledge if he gets the Grand Master a carpet, he begins a journey on which everyone-from Spinner to Goatkeeper-tells him their problems. What about me? they demand. In the search for the answers, the boy discovers he has all the knowledge he needs. A wonderful, circular tale that makes a terrific read-aloud, What About Me? is also a story with a wise moral. Ed Young's deceptively simple cut-paper images seem to jump off the page.

This sensitively written problem novel deals with a young woman's struggle to stay true to her own goals and values while trying to save her boyfriend from himself. Erica Arrendondo, 18, is an excellent student who volunteers at the Humane Society, plays volleyball, and desperately wants to be a veterinarian. Her boyfriend is spiraling down a path of self-destruction and pulling her along with him. Topics such as keeping parents unaware of sexual relationships, the trauma of rape, the stress of college applications, the rewards of volunteerism, and the threat of AIDS are all gently interwoven into the main story of the trials of young love. The characters are compelling and the novel itself almost impossible to put down. The writing is superb and the realistic tone sets this book alongside the best of the genre. This fifth entry in the series about students at Hamilton High is an excellent addition to any YA collection. - School Library Journal.Erica pours more and more of her heart and soul into helping boyfriend Danny get his life back on track. But the more she tries to help him, the more she loses sight of her own dreams. It takes a tragic turn of events to show Erica that she can't "save" Danny, and that she is losing herself in the process of trying. Finally, Erica is forced to wonder, "But what about me?" She begins the difficult task of putting her own life back together again. But What About Me? puts real-life problems of acquaintance rape into a candid fictional format that can grab the attention of teen readers the way no amount of simple lecturing can ever do. - Midwest Book Review

    Kate Figes

    (Pan MacMillan, Feb. 6, 2005)
Sue is a forty-six year old GP, mother of two, wife of one. Frankie is her elder daughter, just fourteen, ready to start out in life. The pair are diametrically opposite in years and energy, yet both teeter on the brink of the next big thing. For Sue, forty-six meeting fourteen is where menopause matches adolescence, anxiety is a mother’s middle name, and the new best thing is going to bed. And Frankie? She’s thrown off the sugar and spice chrysalis, is surgically attached to her mobile phone, and is learning about boys, padded bras and the absurdities of her parents.Nothing in common? Well, for starters weight worries, man troubles and a shared desire to break free of the shackle that is home. Oh, and their emails and diaries…Wickedly funny, perceptive and at times very tender, WHAT ABOUT ME? is a wonderful portrait of real life in an average household, sure to strike a familiar chord with mothers and daughters everywhere.
